Mental health emergencies
A mental health emergency occurs when a person is having thoughts of harming themselves or others and feels they are at risk of acting on these thoughts. If this situation occurs to you or someone you know, it is essential to take action by seeking professional assistance to prevent harm. People are often reluctant to take action, and this can lead to tragedy. Consider this: If your life or someone else’s life were in danger due to some other reason (e.g., a heart attack), would you hesitate?
If you are at immediate risk, it is best to summon help immediately and access a hospital emergency room. If you feel there is an emerging risk, there are several options, including going to a hospital, or consulting with a professional by phone. More information about these options is described below.
Resources available for consultation (Atlanta area)
For Georgia Tech students and concerned others (e.g., faculty, family, friends), the Georgia Tech Counseling Center operates a 24-Hour Crisis Consultation line at 404-894-2575. When you call this line, you will reach the Georgia Tech Police Department who will contact the counselor on call, who will then call you back promptly. You can then speak with the counselor about your situation and develop a plan for dealing with it.
Alternatively, you may call your county’s mental health line for a consultation. These numbers are commonly listed in your local phone book. For Fulton County (404) 730-1600; for Dekalb County (404) 892-4646.
In addition to professional consultation, you may want to consider seeking the help of friends and family to help you deal with the situation.
Hospitalization (Atlanta area)
In some cases, hospitalization may be appropriate. You may obtain hospitalization by going to any hospital emergency room or police station. If you need police assistance on the Georgia Tech campus, call the Georgia Tech Police Department (404-894-2500); if off campus call 911. Local hospitals with psychiatric inpatient services include:
Emory University Hospital - Mental Health Services: 1364 Clifton Road, NE; Atlanta, Georgia 30322; 404-712-7103.
Grady Memorial Hospital - Psychiatric Emergency Room: 80 Jesse Hill Jr. Drive, Atlanta, GA 30303. 404-616-4762.
